CUT

By Patricia McCormick

I have been reading a book called Cut. It is very well written and this book keeps the attention of the reader. This book is about a fifteen-year-old girl named Callie, who is the protagonist in the story, who has been cutting her wrists and was sent to Sea Pines, an institute for patients with problems. She stopped talking when she got there and didn’t want to get help. She learned to communicate and to talk about her problems with her psychiatrist.

Callie is a shy and confused young girl who deals with her stress and her failures by harming herself and also damaging her health by cutting her arms with sharp objects.  Her mother, who is a very neat and a tidy person who worries a lot and has a lot of stress put on her everyday. Callie’s father works many hours a week and is hardly every home. Callie’s brother Sam, is very sick with asthma and gets tired a lot, and needs to have all of his surroundings be clean and sterile so he doesn’t have an attack and get sick again and be put in the hospital. Callie’s psychiatrist is a woman who is listening to the story while Callie talks to her about her life, which makes the story be told in first person.

Mrs. Bell, I highly recommend that you get more copies of this book for our school library because I know that once a couple of people read this book more and more people will hear about it and be interested in spending some time and will want to read this fascinating story about a girl and her struggles to get well. I definitely recommend that you read this book for yourself to see what a wonderful book this is and how it shows a different perspective of how a person copes with difficulties in their life.

I believe that everyone relates to Callie at one point in his or her lifetime. I have when I have been confused with choices that have been present in my life. Callie is a type of person that many people can relate to because she has gone through similar obstacles in her life as other people. This book is so interesting and so inspiring that there should be a requirement that all students in high school read and understand a person’s point of view that they might not be aware of. Mrs. Bell, this is one of the best books that I have read and actually enjoyed. You need to read this book!    B.H.
