Macomb High School Scholastic Bowl (or Scho-Bowl
for short) is an IHSA academic co-curricular activity in which teams
of five compete against each other by answering a variety of toss-up and
bonus questions.
These questions may be in the following categories:
History, Math, Science, Geography, Literature, Language Arts, Fine Arts,
Sports, World News, or Popular Culture.
The MHS Scholastic Bowl team competes on Saturdays
and Sundays throughout the school year. The season begins with the
Quincy University WGEM Tournament and ends with the IHSA state competitions
in March.
There are about 30 members of the 2006-2007 Macomb
High Scholastic Bowl team, and the team is coached by Suellyn Rieckelman.
History of MHS Scholastic Bowl
MHS Scholastic Bowl first began in 1993. The
organization is a member of the IHSA and competes annually in the IHSA regional
tournament. MHS has won the IHSA regional
each year since 1997. Also, MHS competes
annually in the Masonic Scholastic Bowl Scholarship Tournament. Money won
from the Masonic tournaments is used for a scholarship for a senior member of
the MHS Scholastic Bowl team. Since 1997, the
Macomb Rotary has hosted a tournament at MHS. Ten teams competed in 1997,
and the tournament was so successful that it was expanded to allow sixteen teams
to compete with one another in subsequent years.
